Deep-sea benthic ecosystems waste nothing and recycle everything, even viruses

چکیده

Viruses are the most abundant biological entities of global ocean and have a pervasive role in marine ecosystems because, being major cause mortality, they module functioning food webs, biogeochemical cycling. This is due not only to their ability infect lyse organisms but also decomposition particles (viral decay). The organic matter viral origin, indeed, can be recycled by benthic thus representing an additional important source for metabolism, especially deep-sea sediments, characterized very low availability trophic resources. short note will present overview available information on decay ecosystems.

Macroecological drivers of archaea and bacteria in benthic deep-sea ecosystems

Bacteria and archaea dominate the biomass of benthic deep-sea ecosystems at all latitudes, playing a crucial role in global biogeochemical cycles, but their macroscale patterns and macroecological drivers are still largely unknown. We show the results of the most extensive field study conducted so far to investigate patterns and drivers of the distribution and structure of benthic prokaryote as...

Fungal diversity in deep-sea hydrothermal ecosystems.

Deep-sea hydrothermal ecosystems are considered oases of life in oceans. Since the discovery of these ecosystems in the late 1970s, many endemic species of Bacteria, Archaea, and other organisms, such as annelids and crabs, have been described. Considerable knowledge has been acquired about the diversity of (micro)organisms in these ecosystems, but the diversity of fungi has not been studied to...

Resilience of benthic deep-sea fauna to mining activities.

With increasing demand for mineral resources, extraction of polymetallic sulphides at hydrothermal vents, cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts at seamounts, and polymetallic nodules on abyssal plains may be imminent. Here, we shortly introduce ecosystem characteristics of mining areas, report on recent mining developments, and identify potential stress and disturbances created by mining. We analyz...

Abrupt climate change and collapse of deep-sea ecosystems.

We investigated the deep-sea fossil record of benthic ostracodes during periods of rapid climate and oceanographic change over the past 20,000 years in a core from intermediate depth in the northwestern Atlantic. Results show that deep-sea benthic community "collapses" occur with faunal turnover of up to 50% during major climatically driven oceanographic changes. Species diversity as measured b...
